On December 5th, the 591st Lecture of the University and 2nd Nanhu Forum of the Division of Science was held in the 108 lecture hall of the Mathematics Building. Professor Yiming Long, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, working in the Chern Institute of Mathematics of Nankai University, was invited to give an academic lecture. Fangbing Meng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the university, and Huansong Zhou, chief professor of mathematics, attended the lecture, along with leaders and representatives of teachers and students of the School of Mathematics. The lecture was undertaken by the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
Deputy Secretary Fangbing Meng presented the lecture and delivered a speech, and also awarded a commemorative certificate of Nanhu Forum to Academician Yiming Long.
Academician Yiming Long brought a wonderful lecture entitled “From the Sino-American Airline to the "Around the World in 80 Days” to the attendees. Mr. Long took the story of an English gentleman who traveled around the world in 80 days in Jules Verne's novel “Around the World in 80 Days” as the starting point, and introduced the concept of closed geodesic and related mathematical theories and the stories of some famous mathematicians in the field, as well as the important achievements of his research team in this field, the unsolved mathematical problems and the real-world applications behind these mathematical theories. He encouraged young students to maintain their curiosity and desire for knowledge in the objective world, cultivate the spirit of exploration and innovation, and have the courage to tackle key problems and overcome difficulties.
Academician Yiming Long brought a very enlightening academic lecture to the teachers and students with his profound knowledge and vivid research cases, which benefited them a lot, broadening their academic horizons. After the lecture, Mr. Long interacted with the young students.
